The recent flowering of science fiction  and fantasy (SF/F) in India, as marked by the recent release of the short-story collection Magical Women (Hachette India), would lead many to wrongly believe that this is a new phenomenon. But speculative fiction has a long history and tradition in India, with some landmarks of world SF/F originating here. Even the current renaissance of Indian SF/F is indicative of how the genre in India is in step with global trends, with women authors leading from the front in revitalising the genre.

This discussion will take us on a journey through the past and the present of Indian SF/F, spotlighting some of the authors who have contributed to it, and the stories of the magical women who are at the vanguard of contemporary Indian SF/F.
