Bully, winner of the Hindu Metroplus Playwright Award, 2014, is a psychological drama centred on Leo, an Anglo-Indian restaurateur in the twilight of his life, living in the rubble of his past, surrounded with the remnants of family and friends left to him – weary, scarred, but still belligerent. In the words of the judges, the play explores the lives of these “memorable characters steeped in failure and loathing who reach out to each other in awkward and flailing gestures of incompleteness. As memories and perception collide in a deftly interwoven narrative with rapid jumps in time and place, the emotional cruelty which is the dominant tenor of the play never quite drowns out the small voice of compassion that, ultimately, lifts this play into the realm of the humane.”

Anshuman Acharya is a Bangalore-based writer and theatre artist, working with the Indian Ensemble theatre group. Bully is his first play.
