Odissi dancer Surupa Sen will share with us the story of her life in dance, from her childhood to her present position as creative director of Nrityagram, the first and only dance village in India that was established by the iconoclastic Odissi dancer Protima Gauri Bedi. She will speak of the major influences on her art, from her first guru, Guru V S Ramamurthy of Hyderabad, who taught her Bharatanatyam, to Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra who taught her the essence of movement in Odissi, to Guru Kalanidhi Narayanan who honed her skill in abhinaya, to Protima herself, who worked both as a role model and source of inspiration in teaching her to lose herself completely in dance. She will also talk about the shows she has choreographed and performed in, about her co-dancers and students, as well as her hopes for her future growth as a dancer, both individually and as the artistic director and choreographer of Nrityagram.
Surupa Sen’s talk is the fourth in the Creative Journeys Lecture Series presented by Toto Funds the Arts. The series provides a platform for both younger and more experienced writers, filmmakers, performing artists and visual artists to speak about the influences, impulses, processes and thinking that have shaped the art they produce.
