Kolkata-based theatre and film actor, director, lyricist and erstwhile economist Srijit Mukherji achieved fame with his very first film Autograph, a critically acclaimed commercial blockbuster. His second film, Baishe Srabon, was an even bigger success. Hemlock Society, his third full-length feature film, was released in June this year to wide critical acclaim. Srijit is the leading light of a band of new and young Bengali directors who are creating work that speaks directly to the current generation of Bengalis. Srijit was awarded the Young Achiever Award from Rotary International, the prestigious Shera Bangali Award from ABP Anando and the Shoilojanando Mukhopadhyay Memorial Award in 2012 for his contribution in the field of film direction.  For more information on the three films, please see the attachment.

In recent years we have witnessed a new wave of critically acclaimed or commercially successful films––fiction, non-fiction, shorts and experimental–– by a new generation of filmmakers. The novelty and diversity of their films have drawn middle-class urban audiences back into movie-halls. While it is possibly too early to look for patterns, these new filmmakers are mirroring the changing character and concerns and of our society and redefining film as a mode of expression, a tool for storytelling, a product of an industry. With ‘New Voices in Indian Films’, Toto Funds the Arts will bring some of these films and directors closer to you.
