Bangalore-based playwright, director and actor Ramneek Singh'swork includes the plays Shedding Petals, Frozen Wings, and The Cage of Sparrows that won the TFA Creative Writing Award 2012 and the Shyamanand Jalan National Youth Theatre Award 2012. He received the Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship for Performing Arts 2012-13 to study at the London International School of Performing Arts (LISPA) starting January 2013. He has received his artistic training under Abhishek Majumdar and at the Adishakti Laboratory for Theatre Art Research, Puducherry.
The Cage of Sparrows, set in a small village in Punjab, tells the story of Rulda Singh who runs a business of smuggling people into Europe, and his sister’s only son Rinku who desperately wants to go to Europe to find work. When a group of men smuggled by another agent goes missing, Rulda Singh sees it as a chance to destroy the agent, thus making him the most powerful man in the village. Overcome by greed and lust for power, he finds himself turning into a man he recognises only too well. Rinku, on the other hand, realises that the only chance for escape he has would require him to betray his own friend. The play questions the notion of opportunity in an increasingly unequal world where the jails in one country are better than the houses in another. The Cage of Sparrows is currently being produced by Padatik, and will open in Kolkata around October 2012.
