Toto Awards for Short Film 2021: Shortlist

This has been an unusually strong year for the short film Toto Awards. As many as 40 films (from a total of 130 applications) were long-listed and seven films (as against the usual four) have made it to the shortlist. The names of the shortlisted filmmakers (in alphabetical order) and the titles of their films are as follows:

The names of the two winners, who will each receive a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a handcrafted trophy, will be announced at an online awards ceremony in February 2021. 

TFA wishes all the shortlisted filmmakers best of luck and deeply regrets that not all of them can win a Toto Award for Short Film in 2021!

About the play

Set in Hyderabad a year after independence, The Echoing Chamber is about suppressed collective history and memory that were central to the making of this country. The play brings together subaltern voices and allows the audience to engage in an anachronistic reflection on the consequences of failing to recollect the making of the ‘nation’ and ‘national identity’. Our self and the actor embody different experiences and are restricted from forming a cohesive identity for themselves owing to their ‘forgetfulness’ and continue to “repeat what we cannot remember”.

About the playwright

Described as one of the most exciting young playwrights to emerge from India in recent years, Swati Simha is the author of several plays, many of which have been performed. She received her Master’s from Shanghai Theatre Academy, China and is currently pursuing a PhD at the Centre for Comparative Politics and Political Theory at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. The Echoing Chamber won her the Toto Award for Creative Writing in 2019. She was one of the playwrights commissioned for the B!rth Festival at Royal Exchange, Manchester. Her play Flypaper Trap was written under the mentorship of Royal Court Theatre at the Writer’s Bloc residency.

About the director

Pallavi M D is a singer, actor, composer, editor, sound designer and filmmaker based in Bangalore. She has a degree in Psychology, English and Journalism from Bangalore University and a degree in Hindustani classical music from the Benares University. She has won the META Best Actress award for her one-woman performance in C Sharp C Blunt, and the Karnataka State Best Playback Singer Award for her song in the film Duniya. She was recently awarded the Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for her work in the field of Bhav Sangeet.  She is keen on multidisciplinary collaborations.

CREATIVE WRITING IN KANNADA

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Toto Funds the Arts (TFA) invites applications from persons between the ages of 18 and 29, for its 2019 Toto Award for Creative Writing in Kannada in three genres: short plays, short stories and poetry. To mark the fifteenth year of the Toto Awards, the award amount has been raised to Rs 50,000. The winner will be chosen by an independent panel of jurors. Entries should reach TFA by 20 August 2018 at the latest.

The awards are meant only for Indian citizens resident in India (Overseas Citizen of India card-holders are not eligible.)  And, since the spirit of the awards is to identify promising young writers, you are eligible to apply if you were born on or after 1 January 1989. No exceptions will be made.

The hard copy and soft copy of each entry MUST be accompanied by an Application Form, which you can access by clicking here.  You can also request a copy by writing to tfa.kannada@gmail.com. No entry will be accepted without the Application Form, with all particulars filled in, along with your name and signature as it appears in your bank account.

Each entry should be not more than 7,500 words.

If you are submitting poems, please send 6 to 10 poems.

If you are submitting short stories, their combined word length should be between 2,500 and 7500 words. You may, if you wish, send only a single story of 2,500 to 7,500 words.

For plays, you may submit a single play or two or three, but again their combined word length should not exceed 7,500 words.

You can send entries in all three categories — poems, short stories and plays — but you must send in a separate entry for each category. For example, your poems can constitute one entry, your short stories a second, and plays a third. 

Please submit only a typed, not handwritten, copy of your entry or entries. Please state the awards category for which you are applying on the envelope, e.g., Writing-Kannada (poetry) or Writing-Kannada (play) or Writing-Kannada (short story). 

Also ensure that no page of your entry, with the exception of the Application Form and the envelope in which you send your entry, carries your name on it.

Unless you have won this TOTO Award earlier, you are eligible to apply again, but please submit new work for consideration.

CALL FOR ENTRIES

TOTO FUNDS THE ARTS (TFA) invites entries for its fourteenth TOTO Music Award from young musicians and bands. The winner, to be decided by an eminent panel, will receive a cash award of Rs 60,000.

Entries should reach TFA by 31st August 2017. 

Contemporary original music from all parts of India, in any genre and language, is welcome. In the past TFA has received entries in genres ranging from rock, jazz, heavy metal and electronic to instrumental and folk. Although it is never easy to compare diverse entries, our experience is that talent and potential have a way of standing out regardless. TFA tends to reward music that explores new territory in the Indian music scene in the hope that the recognition and the cash award can help sustain it. The selected jury comprises individuals with experience as well as an open ear for new sounds.

Only Indian nationals resident in India are eligible for the award. (Overseas Citizen of India card-holders are not eligible.) Since the spirit of the award is to identify and encourage young talent, you can apply if you (and all band members if any) were born on or after 1 January 1988.

Over the past thirteen years, the Toto Music Award has come to be coveted by young musicians because it recognizes excellence. It helps you to see where you stand among the best upcoming musicians in the country, and to get your music heard and appreciated by veterans in the field. The jury will assess musical content as well as the potential of the artist/band. Professional recording quality is not a requirement but applicants are encouraged to make their tracks sound as good as possible.

How To Apply for the Toto Music Award

The application process is fully online.

3.    Artist Details: Fill in all the fields as required so that we have your artist details.

4.    Music: We require you to submit 3 of your best tracks for review. In order to do this, they must be up on soundcloud.com (this is a requirement!) and the form will accept a link for each track.

5.    Pictures: 3 print resolution pictures of the artist/band, if possible in performance will need to be uploaded in the appropriate section of the form.

ಸೃಜನಶೀಲ ಯುವ ಬರಹಗಾರರಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತೇಜನ ನೀಡುವ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿತವಾದ ಟೊಟೊ ಪುರಸ್ಕಾರವು ಕಳೆದ ನಾಲ್ಕು ವರ್ಷದಿಂದ ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೂ ವಿಸ್ತಾರಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಈ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಟೊಟೊ ಫಂಡ್ಸ್ ದಿ ಆರ್ಟ್ಸ್ (Toto Funds the Arts TFA) ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ.

ಕನ್ನಡದ ಸೃಜನಶೀಲ ಯುವ ಬರಹಗಾರರಿಗೆ ಮೀಸಲಾದ 2017 ನೇ ಸಾಲಿನ ಟೊಟೊ ಪುರಸ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಟೊಟೊ ಫಂಡ್ಸ್ ದಿ ಆರ್ಟ್ಸ್ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯು ಪ್ರವೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಆಹ್ವಾನಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಪುರಸ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಬರಹಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳುಹಿಸುವವರು ಭಾರತೀಯ ನಾಗರಿಕರಾಗಿರಬೇಕು ಹಾಗೂ 18 ರಿಂದ 29 ವರ್ಷ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನವರಾಗಿರಬೇಕು. ಅಂದರೆ, ನೀವು 1 ಜನವರಿ 1987 ರ ನಂತರ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವರಾಗಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಈ ಪುರಸ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳಿಸಲು ಅರ್ಹರು. ಕಥೆ, ಕವಿತೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಾಟಕ ಈ ಮೂರರಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವುದೇ ಪ್ರಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿಯಾದರೂ ಪ್ರವೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳಿಸಬಹುದು. ಈ ಎಲ್ಲ ಪ್ರಕಾರಗಳಿಂದ ಒಬ್ಬರನ್ನು ಪುರಸ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡದ ಹಿರಿಯ ಬರಹಗಾರರ ಸಮಿತಿಯು ಮಾಡಲಿದೆ. ಪುರಸ್ಕೃತರು 30,000 ರೂಪಾಯಿಗಳ ನಗದು ಬಹುಮಾನವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯುವರು.

  ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಭಾರತೀಯ ನಾಗರಿಕರು ಮಾತ್ರ ಈ ಪುರಸ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳಿಸಬಹುದು.  

·         ಪ್ರತಿ ಪ್ರವೇಶವು 7500 ಶಬ್ದಗಳನ್ನು ಮೀರಬಾರದು. 
ಕವಿತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳುಹಿಸುವವರು 6 ರಿಂದ 10 ಕವಿತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳಿಸಬಹುದು. 
ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳಿಸುವವರು ಒಂದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳಿಸಬಹುದು - ಆದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕತೆಗಳೂ ಸೇರಿ 7500 ಶಬ್ದಗಳನ್ನು ಮೀರಬಾರದು. 
ನೀವು ಎಲ್ಲ ಮೂರು ಪ್ರಕಾರಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಪ್ರವೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳುಹಿಸಬಹುದು. ಆದರೆ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಪ್ರಕಾರಕ್ಕೂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕವಾದ ಪ್ರವೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳಿಸಬೇಕು. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ ನೀವು ಎಲ್ಲ ಮೂರೂ ಪ್ರಕಾರಗಳಿಗೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳಿಸಬಯಸಿದರೆ, ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕವಿತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮೊದಲ ಪ್ರವೇಶವಾಗಿಯೂ, ಕತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಎರಡನೆಯ ಪ್ರವೇಶವಾಗಿಯೂ, ನಾಟಕವನ್ನು ಮೂರನೆಯ ಪ್ರವೇಶವಾಗಿಯೂ ಕಳಿಸಬೇಕು. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಪ್ರವೇಶದ ಮಿತಿ 7500 ಶಬ್ದಗಳು.

·         ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಪುಸ್ತಕರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿರುವ ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪುರಸ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕಳಿಸುವಂತಿಲ್ಲ. ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿರುವ ಬಿಡಿ ಕಥೆ, ಕವಿತೆ, ನಾಟಕಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳುಹಿಸಬಹುದು.

·         ಪ್ರವೇಶಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕಳುಹಿಸುವ ಕತೆ, ಕವಿತೆ, ನಾಟಕಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಎಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಹೆಸರು ಬರೆದಿರಬಾರದು. ಇದನ್ನು ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕವಾಗಿ ಬರೆದು ಪ್ರವೇಶದ ಜೊತೆ ಲಗತ್ತಿಸಬೇಕು.

·         
ನೀವು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುವ ಪ್ರತಿ ಪ್ರವೇಶದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ದಿನಾಂಕ, ಕೃತಿಯು ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ ಪ್ರಕಟನೆಯ ವಿವರಗಳನ್ನು ನಮೂದಿಸಿ, ಇದು ನಿಮ್ಮದೇ ಸ್ವಂತ ಸೃಜನಶೀಲ ಕೃತಿಯೆಂಬುದನ್ನು ದೃಢೀಕರಿಸಿದ ಲಿಖಿತ ಹೇಳಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಲಗತ್ತಿಸಬೇಕು. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಅಂಚೆಯ ವಿಳಾಸ, ಈಮೇಲ್ ವಿಳಾಸ, ಫೋನ್ ನಂಬರುಗಳು (ಚರ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ಥಿರ ದೂರವಾಣಿ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಗಳು) ಹಾಗೂ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವವಿವರಗಳುಳ್ಳ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಬಯೋಡಾಟಾ ಕೂಡ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಹಾಳೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಬರೆದು ಕಳಿಸಿ.

·         ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರವೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಸಾದಾ ಅಂಚೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಅಥವಾ ಕುರಿಯರ್ ಮೂಲಕ ಈ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುವ ವಿಳಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಕಳಿಸಿ. ರಿಜಿಸ್ಟರ್ಡ್ ಪೋಸ್ಟ್ ಅಥವಾ ಸ್ಪೀಡ್ ಪೋಸ್ಟ್ ಮೂಲಕ ಕಳಿಸಬೇಡಿ.

·         ಹಸ್ತಪ್ರತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಳೆಯ ಒಂದೇ ಮಗ್ಗಲಿಗೆ ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ಬಳಸಿ ಅಥವಾ ಟೈಪ್ ಮಾಡಿ ಕಳಿಸಬೇಕು. ಮುದ್ರಿತ ಪ್ರತಿ ಕಳಿಸುವುದು ಕಡ್ಡಾಯ.

ಟಿ.ಎಫ್.ಎ. ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯು ಆಂಗಿರಸ ‘ಟೊಟೊ’ ವೆಲ್ಲಾನಿಯ ಸ್ಮರಣಾರ್ಥ 2004 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿತವಾಯಿತು. ಕಲೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗಾಢವಾದ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನಿರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಟೊಟೊರವರ ಅಕಾಲಿಕ ಮರಣವು ಅವರ ಕುಟುಂಬ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರನ್ನು ಈ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆಗೆ ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸಿತು. ಈ ಮೂಲಕ ಯುವ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಗಳಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಕಲಾತ್ಮಕ ಅಭಿವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಉತ್ತೇಜನ ಸಿಗಲೆಂಬುದು ಇದರ ಆಶಯವಾಗಿದೆ.
