Flashback: A festival of Short Films and a Workshop

Writing about movies with Tanul Thakur

Since its invention in the late 19th century, film has emerged as the most prominent medium of cultural expression of our society.  No wonder then, critical analysis and interpretation of the film text is often done with a quest to deepen the understanding of the complexities of human society. After all, as the great auteur Satyajit Ray wrote in his essay for The Statesman in 1948 "the raw material of cinema is life itself". Now, one can say, in return, cinema has offered us material which has allowed us to enhance our understanding of the human condition and has opened us up to the immense possibilities of the medium. But how does one approach film analysis? What are the tools and techniques which can aid in reading a film? How does one translate their thoughts about a film(s) into writing? What are the different forms of writing about movies?

In this workshop, the national award winning film critic Tanul Thakur will guide the participants to find answers to these questions and more.

The workshop will be conducted over two days and will involve

- Two interactive classroom sessions

- Watching movies screened as part of the Flashback TFA short film festival

- Writing exercises to be completed in own time

Note: All aspiring participants are required to watch the screenings scheduled between 17- 19 November as part of FLASHBACK - A festival of short films.
