Reflections on Photography: Expressing the Self and Engaging the World

Speakers: Vijay Sarathy, Prakash Bhuyan, Farheen Fatima and Brishbhanu Baruah

Moderator: Anshika Varma

While visual storytelling through photography is in a constant state of flux, the medium is often used also as an outlet for self-expression, navigating the ideas of memory and longing. How do personal experiences influence and impart unique approaches to documentary or other forms of photography? Four photographers shortlisted for the 2022 TOTO Photography Awards speak with Anshika Varma (photographer, curator and the founder of Offset Projects) about a range of lens-based approaches to photography as documentation and self-expression.

These films respectively portray in poignant and unique ways, resilience in the face of socio-political absurdities, personal grief, the inevitable challenges of ageing, and the unexpected and sudden changes in the conditions of living. How did the filmmakers approach such difficult subjects? What inspired them to make films? How do they envision their future film practice? To help us understand this and more, award-winning filmmakers Priyanka Chhabra and Priya Naresh will converse with the shortlisted filmmakers over two live Zoom sessions.

Love, Loneliness and Magical Beings: New Writing in English

Speakers:  Priyanka Sutaria, Aswin Vijayan, Uday Kanungo and Solomon Maria Donald

Romance and rootlessness, the supernatural and the all too human are themes that vie for our attention in the prose and poetry shortlisted for the 2022 TOTO Awards for Creative Writing in English. Radhika Iyengar (independent journalist who writes on arts, culture, marginalised communities, history and gender) talks to shortlisted writers about their processes, the inspirations for their creativity and the challenges they face as young writers.

Conversing with writer-journalist Preethi Nagaraj, they speak about their choice of expression and the kind of politics that informs their writing

Night of the Nominee – Virtual Edition

Performers/Speakers: Ranjani Ramadoss, Niranjan Joshi and Kevin Shaji 

Moderator:  Vishruti Bindal

Get to know the three young musicians shortlisted for the 2022 TOTO Award for Music: singer/composer Ranjani Ramadoss aka RANJ, pianist Niranjan Joshi, and producer/composer Kevin Shaji aka Pina Colada Blues. In conversation with them will be Vishruti Bindal, who is herself a music artist and music professional. The conversation will cover a range of topics—from releasing music through the pandemic and working with the Internet as the main medium of outreach to drawing from various facets of their lives in India as inspiration for their music. The shortlisted musicians will also be premiering live versions of one of their songs, exclusively recorded for this event.

The Toto Awards 2022

Now in its eighteenth year, the annual TOTO Awards celebrate emerging artistic talent in India. There are eight awards to be won—two for English Creative Writing, one for Kannada Creative Writing, two for Photography, two for Short Film and one for Music. Every winner will receive a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 and a handsome trophy, except for the winner of the Music Award, who will receive Rs. 60,000. Witness the work of all writers, photographers, filmmakers and musicians who have been shortlisted for the 2022 TOTO Awards and discover the names of the winners.

All six events leading up to the Awards ceremony have been supported by Sucheta, Rashmi, Madhavi and Deepti (in memory of their late father  Shantinath Desai, a pioneering modernist in Kannada literature).
